Becoming a Host

What Do I Need To Do?

Prospective hosts must agree to our application process and one of us coming to visit your home.

Before you call us there are some things you need to consider as a family.

  • Do you have time for what is involved? Helping a student feel welcome in your home, time to chat and encourage a nervous student with limited English, riding the buses with them to show them the way to school. Providing healthy meals and interesting and generous lunches. Supervision and support as you would your own child of similar age.
  • Do you live in a safe well lit location, close to buses?
  • Suitable room. Are you offering a nice sunny room of reasonable size or the small room that no one else in your home wants?
  • Students room should have; clean fresh duvet and pillow and adequate storage of their own,  a safe heater, a good sized desk, lamp and chair.
  • Bathroom should be clean and fresh with adequate ventilation and not too many people trying to use it.
  • Smoke alarms installed and working throughout the home.  Gas monitors if you are using gas cooking or heating.
  • Your home must be secure and the student taught to keep it this way.  Students must have own key.
  • Everyone living in your home 18 years or older, must be willing to be Police vetted regularly.
  • Broadband internet in your home is essential these days.  Students must provide their own computer and contribute to internet plan of the host.
